At the Population Council, we are working on a new method for male contraception using an implant which will be inserted under the skin of the arm and delivers a male hormone. The name of that hormone is MENT, and this hormone has a specific profile, does not stimulate the prostate growth, and this is an advantage compared to the normal male hormone which may lead with age and long-term therapy to increase the growth of the prostatic cells. So we are working with several clinics where we tested these implants which are produced in this very lab, and these implants will deliver sufficient hormones to replace the androgen of the men because we are blocking their own function and we block the sperm production so then they will become as azospermic (without sperm) and they would not be able to fertilize the egg. And therefore they would not be able to induce a pregnancy. This is a method which is now in the advanced stage of development. We are finalizing better prototype of implants for the next clinical studies.
